Unaccompanied Minors Flying to Camp

Procedures for Unaccompanied Minors arriving to camp by air

1.       Some airlines require passengers below a certain age (it varies from airline to airline) to fly as “unaccompanied minors”.  The airlines charge an additional fee for these minors.

2.       The airlines require a name of who is picking up the minors at the airport.  DO NOT put Coach Pilat as the pick up person.  Coach Pilat WILL NOT be picking up any campers at the airport.

3.       To find out the name of who is picking up campers, email coach pilat at pilat@roanoke.edu one week prior to the first day of camp.  Coach Pilat will be able to tell you who is picking up campers at that time and not before.

4.       The minor must be brought by airline personnel, to baggage claim to meet the driver.  The driver WILL NOT go to the gait or ticket counter to find the camper.

5.       At the conclusion of camp, The driver WILL NOT and CANNOT stay with the camper at the airport waiting for the flight to depart.  Some airlines will attempt to make the driver stay with the camper.  This is their job, to escort the camper to the plane.  The driver has other shuttles to drive and is not able to stay with the minor.  Parents must be prepared to speak with the airlines on the final day of camp to make this clear.

6.       If a major problem occurs with an outbound flight (cancelled flight, major delays), Coach Pilat will do all he can do to help camper.  Be advised, Coach Pilat is also traveling on the final day of all camps and may be in transit himself.

7.       If you are uncomfortable with these procedures, you will need to find alternate transportation for camper to and from camp.
